The Gladstone Bag

This style of bag was designed in the 1890's and is the forerunner to the modern suitcase. A travel bag, historically adopted by doctors, is called a Gladstone bag and was manufactured in large numbers during the Victorian times right through to the fifties.

This leather bag with its original fastenings is a great addition to the JohnLowin Revival bags and even still retains some of its wonderful interior colour. As the design has changed little through out the generations it's hard to date this bag accurately but is probably from the 1940's. There is a great story told that in Victorian times many unwanted Gladstone bags were used to plant their figs trees in as it was believed the figs trees would produce more fruit if their roots were constricted. Fortunately, this bag was never buried and considering this Gladstone bag is probably around seventy years old it is still in a good working original condition. We have given it a thorough cleaning, nourished and polished the leather. This would make a great overnight or weekend bag and will definitely help you stand out from the crowd.
